Needless to say, there is A LOT going on right now. I’ve been riding the waves of fear and confusion, with hope and optimism. Who can relate? Our fast paced society is being forced to take it easy, and I truly believe that this is what the collective, and the Earth, needed. But that doesn’t make this uncertain time any less difficult. So now, more than ever, our homes are becoming our sanctuaries.
If you are fortunate enough to slow down, this is a great time to spring clean, and put some love back into your home. Below, are my 8 tips for bringing wellness into your bedroom. I wanted to focus on this room specifically, because they are our place to rest, rejuvenate, and heal.
1. Plants
An upside to social distancing – we are home and able to dedicate more attention to our plant babies. Plants are great for lowering stress, purifying the air, and some are even natural humidifiers. As humans, we are innately connected to nature and heal faster when surrounded by it. As a designer, I see not only the health benefits, but the color, texture, and life that they bring to a space. They are my go to for balancing and tying together my designs.
If you’re anything like me, and don’t have the best green thumb (I CANNOT keep aloe alive!), there are many low maintenance options out there. My fiddle leaf is currently thriving. There are a myriad of online shops that you can take advantage of right now, like Bloomscape or The Sill, or even Etsy. If live plants are out of the cards, faux could be another option – just make sure they are realistic looking! I’m also a huge fan of dried botanicals. Anthropologie and West Elm are two of my online go to’s for photoshoots. For a DIY solution, take a walk in nature and collect branches or stems to display in a beautiful vase. Nature is healing and we need that more than ever.
2. Non-Toxic Cleaning Products
Conventional cleaners contain harsh, harmful chemicals, that can irritate the respiratory system and pollute the environment. Switching to non-toxic cleaning products will keep your bedroom air clean and safe, while giving your body a break. (Side note – during this unprecedented time, disinfecting products are critical, so in no way am I currently discouraging those). For regular day to day, I’ve used SuperNatural and Annie’s Pure & Simple (Annie’s offers a natural disinfectant DIY solution on their site, as well). I have yet to try Branch Basics, but I’ve heard great things. With many cleaning supplies on backorder, there are also tons of DIY solutions on Pinterest that you can try.
3. Air Purifier
The hype is real IMO, especially if you have allergies. AP’s absorb VOCs (the airborne compounds from things like paint, rugs, and other finishes around the house), gases, and odors. They also catch dust, pollen, pet dander, dust mite debris, smoke, and mold spores. AND they can reduce certain viruses and bacteria. My allergies have been a lot over the past few years, and this has been the biggest game changer for waking up and feeling well. I always recommend these for the bedroom because your body is repairing and healing during sleep, and clean air makes this easier. I’m linking the one I personally have here, but you can also read reviews to find what best suits your needs and budget.
4. Fresh bedding
This one is straightforward but there is nothing better than getting into bed with freshly washed sheets. I’m not sure if this is just me, but I’ve turned into Grandpa Joe during this social distancing, and spend wayyyy more time in bed. Staying on top of washing your sheets, is important to decrease germs, and improving overall well-being. If you are ambitious, you can wash them with a non-toxic detergent (I use this) or upgrade to sustainable, non-toxic bedding from Ettitude or Coyuchi.
5. Crystals
It’s no a secret, how much I love crystals. I love the way they look and the way they feel, and their endless purposes. Each one contains different minerals and energy, depending on the parts of the Earth that they come from. Their unique vibrations also help to support specific chakras in the body. So if you are looking for peaceful sleep, amethyst, for example, would be a great option to put near your bed or even under your pillow. In times like this, lepidolite is calming and stabilizing, and can soothe anxiety (something I think we could all use rn!). There are so many to explore (I plan to post more about this in the next couple of weeks) and Google is a great resource to learn . Even if you don’t believe in their benefits, I think we can all agree that they add a beautiful, earthy touch.
6. Smudging
Smudging is a great way to cleanse yourself and your home, by clearing away any stagnant or negative energy. This can be done by lighting sage, palo santo, or sweetgrass, in a small bowl, and setting an intention, while allowing the smoke to purify the space . This is one of my favorite rituals to do after I clean because the room will feel lighter and more peaceful. I’m also linking a video here that explains how to smudge the traditional way, since this is a borrowed practice from Native Americans and other indigenous peoples. Once you are done, you can light a candle or incense, to bring fresh energy back in.
7. Declutter & Rearrange
Raise your hand if you’ve been personally victimized by an unruly closet? I always feel better and more focused after organizing and clearing away things I no longer need, but it’s something that I struggle with. However, it is so inspiring to pare things down, appreciate what you truly love, and to make space for the new. One of the biggest tips that I’ve learned, is to start small. For example, start with a closet or a drawer that is super messy, and work your way through at your own pace. The internet also has a ton of resources on minimizing, thanks to Marie Kondo.
I am all about moving pieces around to get the energy flowing (I feel like I could write a whole post just about this topic!). A super easy way to do this, is to remove everything from your shelves and restyle. Not only will you be able to get a really good clean, but you’ll also be changing up the vibe and look to keep things fresh. When I’m working with clients, I also try to apply the minimal feng shui practices that I know. A simple example (if your space allows), is to create a direct sightline to the door. Primally, we become anxious when our backs are to any door or window because we are put in a vulnerable position when we aren’t able to see who is entering. By facing the doorway, you are lowering stress even if subconsciously.
8. Lightbulbs
Lighting plays a huge impact on our well-being, from mood, to stress, to sleep patterns. Many companies are now creating softer energy efficient options, opposed to harsh blue light. Brilli, is one of my favorite companies because they are a wellness centered brand and post content to educate consumers about the benefits of proper lighting. Their bulbs sync to your circadian rhythm, to help you adjust accordingly for sleep, or to energize in the morning (they are also mercury free!).
Wishing you all well and ample time to rest xx
