My 6 Favorite Places to Shop Sustainable Holiday Wrapping Paper

December 5, 2017

(This post was edited 12/17/18)

As much as I love the holiday season, it can be a time of year for massive amounts of waste.  It’s estimated that over 4 million tons of trash are created from wrapping paper and shopping bags, from the U.S. alone (basically the amount of waste it would take to circle the Earth 9 times… yikes). For years, I have had this nagging feeling, as I watch wrapping + tissue paper tossed into the trash.  I know that we live in a fast paced society, and being ‘sustainable’ is not always at the top of everyone’s list, especially during the holiday season.  Luckily, I found some sustainable options to lower our impact, that’s not only affordable, but also super accessible.  Most importantly, it’s beautiful, since half the fun of gifting, is getting to wrap, right?

1. IKEA

Ok- who knew IKEA could be even better than we thought?  Their wrapping paper options are recyclable and made from 100% renewable material, at IKEA prices.  #bless

2. Wrappily

A biodegradable and recyclable alternative to traditional wrapping paper and printed on soy-based inks.  Founded by Sara Smith (you can read her story here ), after being awakened to the staggering amount of trash produced during the holiday season.  Since traditional wrapping paper is often dyed or laminated, it can’t always be recycled.  Thanks to Wrappily, you can appreciate each reversible sheet, knowing that you’re making a positive impact.  You can also shop most of the prints on Amazon which is ideal.

3. Amazon

This one really needs no introduction…

5. Of the Earth

This option isn’t like ‘traditional’ wrapping paper, it’s cool wrapping paper… but seriously, I love the texture and simplicity of them.  They are ‘treeless’, made of natural lotka fibers, that can be used several times.  Of the Earth is also dedicated to using environmentally friendly production practices, and purchases benefit the economy of rural craftspeople in Nepal.  Several of the products, including the gift tags, are also made with a blend of wildflower seeds that you can water + grow!

6. Paper Raven Co.

You may recognize these patterns from this talented lady who is featured on Minted’s site and their collab with Target.  Her products are printed in the USA on 100% recycled paper, and they are partnered with One Tree Planted, pledging to donate $1 of every sale to plant a tree with their global reforesting teams.
